> NEW SBDM TRAINING FOR EXPERIENCED COUNCIL MEMBERS
PARENT ENGAGEMENT AND STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT NEW FOR 2008! Parents are an untapped resource for improving student achievement. This session will help participants understand the importance of engaging families and the community to improve student achievement. It looks at research on parent engagement and the report of the Commissioner's Parent Advisory Council. Participants will learn how to assess their own levels of parent engagement and develop focused plans to improve student achievement through parent engagement. 3 HOURS LEADING MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND HIGH SCHOOLS TO PROFICIENCY NEW FOR 2008! This session will focus on three key ideas: knowing students personally, knowing students academically, and making students part of the team. Councils from middle schools and high schools will study ways to lead schools to high levels of achievement guided by research focused on secondary education. Participants will explore the importance of relationships with middle and high school students, examine the research on the importance of relationships and how it translates into the "real world" after High school, and understand the benefits of including students as a part of their own educational team. 3 HOURS >SBDM TRAINING FOR NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS INTRO TO SCHOOL-BASED DECISION MAKING, PART 1 Together, the two parts of the new member training will introduce all 16 Keys to School Council Proficiency categories that define what all councils should know and be able to do. (Go to our Resources page to download a document explaining council proficiency.) INTRO PART 1 covers council proficiency and student achievement, a review Kentucky's Standards and Indicators for School Improvement, the state's assessment and accountability system, and basic issues of planning, professional development, and budgets. INTRO TO SCHOOL-BASED DECISION MAKING, PART 2 Review state laws governing school councils, policy development, consultation and principal selection, consensus and committees, and planning for ongoing learning. Each part lasts three hours. New members must complete both parts. Experienced members may choose either part to meet their three-hour council training requirement. >SBDM TRAINING FOR EXPERIENCED COUNCIL MEMBERS BUDGET BASICS This session focuses on how your school can use both financial and other resources to help kids succeed. It looks at the council's role in budget issues, what money the council controls, what other resources come into play. It also includes policy guidelines, and a list of frequently asked questions. Practices from successful Kentucky schools will be shared and discussed. 3 HOURS STEPS TO STUDENT PROFICIENCY The council is accountable for making sure all students are learning and reaching proficiency. This session focuses on the council leading the school by setting high expectations and implementing a system for assessing students regularly through the year. The session also looks at using resources to help students reach proficiency and supporting the school staff as they work to meet the needs of individual students. Practices from successful Kentucky schools will be shared and discussed. 3 HOURS RESEARCH, INSTRUCTION, AND ACTION The best and most effective way to improve student achievement is through research-based learning practices. This session considers two bodies of research: Marzano's Classroom Instruction that Works and Brain-Based Research. Participants will learn about what makes a good policy and steps for translating research idea into policies that make a difference. 3 HOURS PLANNING FOR ACHIEVEMENT What does a strong school improvement plan include? What sort of process builds a plan that will make a difference for your students? This session explains the most important features of effective planning to enhance what students know and can do. 3 HOURS TEAMWORK FOR RESULTS To make a difference for students, your school needs strong teamwork. In this session, see how councils can nurture the positive relationships needed for excellent learning and how you can use hiring and professional development to make your team even stronger. 3 HOURS COUNCIL WORK AND SCHOOL CULTURE A positive school culture plays a central role in helping students (and staff) achieve at high levels. This session focuses on building that culture, including high expectations for all students, positive relationships between staff and students, and fair and open council processes that invite active participation by your whole community. 3 HOURS SCHOOL COUNCIL POLICY Council policies organize the work of the school council and create shared understanding and expectations. This session will look at how your school's policies can also affect your school culture, teachers, students, communication, expectations and especially student achievement. 3 HOURS KEYS TO PROFICIENT COUNCILS The 16 Keys to proficient councils have one focus: Student Achievement. This session will lead you through analysis of how your council is functioning in the Key areas of Focus, Decisions and Process and how that work benefits student achievement at your school. 3 HOURS > PRINCIPAL SELECTION TRAINING Our Principal Selection training provides a step-by-step approach to the important work of choosing an instructional leader. Up-to-date materials reflect the most recent changes and interpretations of the law. Clear and simple tools to help with interview questions and criteria. Our knowledgeable and experienced trainers lead this session during a council meeting so decisions can legally be made. We also offer ongoing support and advice. Principal selection training cannot be used for experienced council member training credit. > SCHEDULING & FOLLOW-UP We are happy to bring any of our training topics to any audience. In addition to bringing you a complete workshop, we can also offer follow-up facilitation help to apply the ideas to your unique situation or arrange a sequence of activities to move your school forward. For council training, you may want to consider being a host school or district. As host, you pay for a trainer's time and transportation, plus materials for your own people. Then KASC publicizes the session and invites folks from other places to attend as well. They pay us a fee, and we share part of that money with your school.
