TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

State law requires that the parents, teachers, and principals who serve on school councils receive annual training. The requirements differ depending on council service and when members were elected. This page explains the rules.

> FOR NEW MEMBERS

If you have been elected to a council for the first time, Kentucky's council law requires you to complete six hours of introductory training within 30 days of the start of your term. For example, if your council term will begin on July 1, 2009, you have from the date of your election until July 30, 2009, to complete this training.

> FOR EXPERIENCED MEMBERS

If you have already completed one year on the council, the law requires you to complete three hours of experienced member training within 120 days of the start of your term. For example, if your new term will begin on July 1, 2009, you will have until October 28, 2009, to complete the requirement. Experienced members can also count training received up to a year before the deadline: for example, if your deadline is October 28, 2009, you can count any experienced council training session you attended on October 29, 2008 or later toward your requirement.

> MEMBERS FILLING VACANCIES

If you are elected in the middle of the year to replace a member who resigns, the law requires you to complete your training within 30 days after you are elected. If you have never been on a council before, you need the new member training. If you have been a council member in the past, you can choose which experienced member session to attend.

>SCHOOL COUNCIL PROFICIENCY

Training designed by KASC and the training for all of the state's endorsed trainers are built around School Council Proficiency targets, criteria that define what all council members should know and be able to do.
