Diagnosing and Prescribing for Strategic Reading (3 hour) — This session will focus on the reading record, a multi-use tool which enables elementary teachers to:
  • Efficiently group students for guided reading or other skills-based literacy instruction.
  • Gather specific reading data for summative assessments to report to parents, administrators or to contribute to a special education referral.
  • Gather formative data to guide on-going instructional decision making such as determining a change in level, setting a teaching focus or adjusting group membership.
  • Provide a basis for on-the-spot differentiated teaching points to move individual readers forward.

Participants will practice coding a child’s reading, analyzing results, and prompting the reader with strengths and teaching points. Suggested audience: elementary regular and special education teachers, interventionists, and Title 1 teachers

The Nuts & Bolts of Reading Instruction (3 hour) —This session is focused on the building block components of reading for elementary instruction: phonics, fluency, writing to support reading, vocabulary, and comprehension. Participants will receive an overview of each component and engage in strategies to incorporate and link components for a stronger, more cohesive reading approach. This hands-on workshop will re-energize teachers for the upcoming school year. Suggested audience: elementary regular and special education teachers, interventionists, and Title 1 teachers

Evidence-Based Practices Made Easy (3 hour) — Schools don’t have the luxury of a trial and error approach to learning. Educators need to focus on what has been proven to work in classrooms so students benefit immediately. This session will engage participants as they:
  • dive into evidence-based practices and strategies
  • use strategies applicable to multiple content areas and levels
  • be prepared to implement or refine practices starting tomorrow

  • walk away with a process for developing quality assessments based on high expectations
  • discover options for making formative assessment doable

The Quality Classroom (6 hour)
—What makes a quality classroom? A quality classroom is one where students not only master standards but also gain an appreciation for the learning process. Studies have consistently shown that these components create an environment for high-quality instruction and learning:

  • high expectations for all
  • active and cognitive student engagement
  • teaching about and for the brain
  • effective formative assessment with quality feedback

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore these components and take back strategies to use in the classroom to transform learning for students.
