(Re)Discover Underappreciated Modifiers

Stephen King maintains, “The road to hell is paved with adjectives.” and “The adverb is not your friend.”

On the other hand, in his essay, “The Craft of Writing,” John Erskine asserts: “When you write, you make a point, not by subtracting as though you sharpened a pencil, but by adding

. . . The noun, the verb, and the main clause serve merely as a base on which the meaning will rise. The modifier is the essential part of any sentence.”

Where do you stand? Participate in this one-day workshop and discover to which position you subscribe . . . and much, much more.

The facilitator will present a case for using modifiers to create valuable meaning for writers and their readers. She will invite you to expand your perception of modifiers from simple adjectives and adverbs to include phrases and clauses that function as modifiers to enhance sentences. In this participatory workshop, you will experience how effective modifier use can improve the quality of your students’ writing - including their performance on writing assessments.

The facilitator will share numerous mentor sentences that illustrate effective modifier use in a variety of mentor texts from various grade levels. She will demonstrate multiple classroom strategies for guiding your students to become discerning users of modifiers to craft meaning, tone, and nuance in their writing. You will take multiple craft lessons back to your classroom that you can put to immediate use fostering your students’ refined use of modifiers that clarify and enrich their writing.
