The facilitator will present a case for us ing modifiers to create valuable meaning for writers and their readers. She will invite you to expand your perception of modifiers from simple adjecti ves and adverbs to include phrases and clauses that function as modifiers t o enhance sentences. In this participatory workshop, you will experience ho w effective modifier use can improve the quality of your students’ writing - including their performance on writing assessments.
The facilitator will share numerous mentor sentences that illustrate effective modifier us e in a variety of mentor texts from various grade levels. She will demonstr ate multiple classroom strategies for guiding your students to become disce rning users of modifiers to craft meaning, tone, and nuance in their writin g. You will take multiple craft lessons back to your classroom that you can put to immediate use fostering your students’ refined use of modifiers tha t clarify and enrich their writing.
