These teachers qualify to compete for the 2022 Kentucky Teacher of the Year Award, which will be announced in September.
(FRANKFORT, KY) – A total of 219 Kentucky educators were recognized Feb. 11 for recently obtaining the highest possible certification in the teaching profession, according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Crowe accepted the award during Kentucky's annual Council for Exceptional Children Conference in November. He also was presented a special award by the Kentucky Department of Education during the Dec. 4 Kentucky Board of Education meeting.
Crowe is a special education teacher at Wayland Alexander Elementary School in Hartford. He started his 17-year career as a school social worker and has been in the classroom for the past 16 years. He approaches his work with students holistically and firmly believes that setting high expectations, creating a safe and encouraging environment and positive role modeling enables students to thrive academically and socially and readies them for “real world” situations.
The Kentucky Department of Education and Valvoline Inc., sponsors of the Kentucky Teacher Awards, have opened nominations for the 2021 Kentucky Teacher Awards.
Nominations may be submitted electronically by visiting the 2021 Kentucky Teacher of the Year website at kentuckytoy.com. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 15. Any full-time public school teacher in the state with at least three years of experience is eligible. Teachers may be nominated by students, parents, teaching peers, principals, superintendents or anyone from the community who has an interest in honoring an outstanding educator.

The award honors a Kentucky businessperson who has partnered with a public school or district to provide outstanding leadership that promotes school improvement and student success.
(FRANKFORT, KY) – The Kentucky Board of Education today presented the eighth annual Dr. Johnnie Grissom Award to Sandy Smock, agriculture teacher and FFA adviser for the Kentucky School for the Deaf (KSD).
The award recognizes those who exhibit leadership, commitment and service to promote high student achievement through instructional equity and in closing the achievement gap for all children. Smock was nominated by Sarah Warren, graduate teaching assistant at the University of Kentucky.
(FRANKFORT, KY) – Erin Elizabeth Ball, a language arts teacher at Georgetown Middle School in Scott County, is the 2020 Kentucky Teacher of the Year. Ball has four years of teaching experience in Scott County Schools.
Valvoline Inc™ and the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) made the announcement today at a ceremony at the Berry Mansion in Frankfort. Secretary of Education and Workforce Development Derrick Ramsey, Commissioner of Education Wayne Lewis and Valvoline CEO Sam Mitchell were on hand to make the presentation.
Melanie Callahan, a 4th-grade teacher at London Elementary (Laurel County), is the 2020 Elementary School Teacher of the Year. Matthew Kaufmann, an English teacher at Marion C. Moore School (Jefferson County), is the 2020 High School Teacher of the Year.

Alison Lundergan Grimes presented the Georgia Davis Powers Award to Boyle County High School. They were the only high school in the state with 100% of eligible students registered to vote.
High School Senior Vanita Fitzwater, along with AP Government teacher Mr. Tyler Murphy, and other students campaigned and held lunch time drives to reach their goal and encourage all eligible students to register.

Seal of Arts Excellence Guidance Now Available
The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is pleased to announce new guidance for establishing a local Seal of Arts Excellence to recognize high school graduates who demonstrate an advanced level of specialization in one or more areas of visual and performing arts. The guidance can be found on the Seal of Arts Excellence webpage.
A new feature for creating a Seal of Arts Excellence on a student’s transcript will be available in Infinite Campus for the 2022-2023 school year. Districts will have the option of adding a Seal of Arts Excellence to a student’s transcript through the Graduation Tab that will include the date of completion as well as the area of specialization. Academic Standards Family Guides Available
The Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) family guides were developed to help families familiarize themselves with the content of each grade level’s standards. Each guide contains a standards overview for reading and writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. The guides are now available in Spanish and can be accessed on the Standards Family Guides & Resources webpage on the KY Standards website.
